Ryuzo Sugimoto

Mr. Ryuzo Sugimoto is principal deputy director in the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ).

He is in charge of MOEJ’s strategy for international cooperation, and sustainable development goals in environmental aspect. He joined MOEJ since 1999 and has over 13 years of experience in various aspects of environment and sustainable development, including climate change, 3R, Chemicals, and EIA in Japan.

Prior to this position, Mr. Sugimoto transferred to Asian Development Bank temporarily for 3 years and 9 months and established a new trust fund, the Japan Fund for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JFJCM) in ADB, which supports ADB projects to introduce advanced low carbon technology.

Born in 1974, Mr. Sugimoto holds a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University, USA (2008); and a Master’s (1999) and Bachelor’s (1997) degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan.

At the 8th HLS ESC, he is hoping to learn more about best practice for SDGs in model cities and to discuss how to promote collaboration among stakeholders.
